Study backs natural diet-based relief for hot flushes and more.
As many women know, menopause can bring a range of symptoms, with hot flushes being one of the most common and disruptive. Hot flushes, often characterised by sudden warmth, sweating, and flushing, can make daily life challenging. While hormone replacement therapy (HRT) has been the go-to treatment for many, more women are turning to natural alternatives to ease their symptoms. One such alternative is a plant-based diet, particularly one that incorporates soybeans. A recent study has shown promising results for postmenopausal women who embraced a low-fat, vegan diet alongside daily soybean consumption. The 12-week study revealed that this combination significantly reduced the frequency and severity of hot flushes. Participants who followed the plant-based diet, including ½ cup of cooked soybeans daily, experienced a remarkable 79% decrease in total hot flushes. What’s more, moderate-to-severe hot flushes were reduced by an incredible 84%. But the benefits didn’t stop there. The study also found that this diet helped improve various aspects of quality of life, including vasomotor, psychosocial, physical, and sexual well-being. In fact, 59% of participants in the intervention group were free from moderate-to-severe hot flushes by the end of the study. These findings highlight the potential of combining diet with plant-based ingredients, like soy, to naturally manage menopause symptoms. Why Soybeans? Soybeans contain isoflavones, plant compounds that mimic oestrogen in the body. This may help balance hormones during menopause, reducing symptoms like hot flushes. Soy is also known for promoting heart health and providing a rich source of protein, making it an excellent addition to a balanced, plant-based diet.
